Naravane: Army's Apolitical Stance Vital for India's Democracy

Former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane recently underscored the military's strictly apolitical nature, warning against attempts to involve it in political discourse. Speaking in an interview, he clarified that adherence to civilian leadership and the chain of command signifies discipline, not politicisation. Naravane emphasised that the armed forces, alongside the judiciary and the press, serve as a foundational pillar of India's robust democracy. He addressed recent controversies, including the political discussion surrounding his unpublished memoir, asserting it is unfair to drag the armed forces into such debates. The General reiterated that the Army's neutrality has been crucial for India's stability and progress, differentiating it from neighbouring countries. He also noted that while the institution remains apolitical, individual personnel retain their democratic rights, including voting.
